Despite limitations on restaurant capacity and event size driven by concerns surrounding COVID-19, downtown Towson is thriving this summer, with fun – and safely socially distant – dining opportunities, shopping and events. Local businesses and their patrons continue to adapt to restrictions and guidelines as they evolve, so the community as a whole can make the most of the summertime while staying as safe as possible.
Here’s a look at what’s happening this summer in downtown Towson – just outside the doors of Hampton Plaza Apartments:
Dining Out in Towson
Current guidelines in Baltimore County allow restaurants to operate outdoors and – with limited capacity – indoors. To accommodate more diners in a safe environment, Towson spots have expanded outdoor seating and made adjustments to their interiors.
Seats on the Street, the outdoor dining initiative the Towson Chamber of Commerce launched earlier this summer, is still going strong. On weekends, the stretch of Pennsylvania Ave. between York Rd. and Washington Ave. closes for outdoor dining, with service from Charles Village Pub, C&R Pub, Nacho Mama’s, The Point, and Slice NY Pizza Pasta & Grill.
Kyodai Rotating Sushi Bar has upgraded its interior with partitions to separate groups from one another, keeping them safe.
Café Troia’s outdoor dining space has fans and carefully spaced tables. The Allegheny Ave. restaurant also offers delivery for a low fee within a 6-mile radius.
Cunningham’s Café & Bakery has new umbrellas for its outdoor patio seating and lots of space (plus daily specials that sound terrific).
Plantbar Towson (the old Zia’s Café) officially reopened at the end of July. The juice bar will roar back to life in August with a fitness + cleanse program.
At The Point, seating is available inside and outside on the patio and the restaurant has live music and DJ’s some nights, and regular trivia nights. Check their Facebook page for specifics.
Barley’s Backyard Uptown is also hosting live music on its rooftop patio.
CVP’s huge patio and indoor space are also both open; the Pennsylvania Ave. restaurant is taking the mask guidelines very seriously, too.
What’s Up at the Mall
Towson Town Center has reopened though some specific stores remain closed. Curbside pickup is also available from many stores and restaurants. If you’re thinking about a big shop, consider heading to the mall the week of August 9-15 for Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week – a seven-day stretch when sales tax is not charged.
Farmers’ Market Is Thriving
The Towson Farmers’ Market is up and running every Thursday, starting at 10 :45 a.m. until 3 p.m. Stop by to check out the market’s selection of food, wine, art and clothing, which stretches down the block of Allegheny Ave. just off the circle.
The market runs through November.
Getting Fit
Local fitness centers have reopened, albeit with new guidelines to ensure the safety of members.
Towne Barre has resumed indoor classes but continues to operate outdoors, as well, and has one-on-one and very small group opportunities for classes.
At YogaWorks, both teachers and students are required to wear masks while practicing (though live classes are also available to stream at home, where you won’t have to wear a mask).
